America's Police State

Scientists push to implement edible RFID tracking chips in food
by: Ethan A. Huff, staff writer
Friday, June 03, 2011
(NaturalNews) It will monitor your calorie intake, show from where your food was sourced, and even let you know when the food in your fridge is about to go bad -- these are some of the enticing claims made by the developers of a new system that embeds edible radio frequency identification (RFID) chips directly into food. Its creators insist the technology will revolutionize the way humans eat for the better, but critical-thinking onlookers will recognize the ploy as just another way to track and control human behavior.
Developed by Hannes Harms from the Royal College of Art in London, the "NutriSmart" system is based on the idea that RFID wafers injected directly into food can help better track the food supply chain, further automate the supermarket shopping experience, and simplify the eating experience by programming data into food so that humans essentially do not have to think about what they are doing.
The technology makes both eating and dealing with food in general mindless, as a person simply needs to plop an RFID-embedded food item onto a special RFID-laced plate, which then tells the person all about the item and how much of it to eat. RFID ovens and microwaves also eliminate having to think about how long to cook an RFID food item -- simply put it in the RFID microwave, oven, or toaster, and the machine will know exactly how long to cook the item.
As interesting and novel as this might sound, such technology is actually quite frightening when taken to its logical ends. NaturalNews previously warned that mad scientists have already developed edible RFID tags for use in pharmaceutical drugs ( These tags, of course, can and will likely be used to monitor patients' compliance with doctors orders, and alert authorities if a patient refuses to take certain pills as prescribed.
And if such technology also ends up in food, it is safe to assume that evil powers will seek to control the food supply with it, as well as monitor the types of food people eat. In other words, if authorities one day decide that vitamin and mineral supplements are off limits, which is what is currently happening in Europe (, it is plausible that RFID technology can assess illegal intake of such nutrients, and immediately send this data to the appropriate enforcement agencies.
This 1984-esque scenario appears to be more than just science fiction -- it is unfolding before our eyes just a little bit more every single day. And the NutriSmart system is just another piece of evidence that those in power wish to micromanage every single aspect of our lives, from the drugs we take to the foods we eat.
US Police State Begins Exponential Expansion
Reaping the Whirlwind of our Inattention
Sher Zieve
Wednesday, May 25, 2011
The recent Indiana Supreme Court ruling against the US Constitution, rendering the Fourth Amendment null and void in that State by patently leftist activist judges, is only the latest unconscionable step in a series of actions designed to unravel each and every portion of the Bill of Rights. It is also one of the latest actions designed to compliment and enhance the already jack-booted Obama police State march into our States, our cities and homes. Soon US citizens will have no rights—whatsoever—unless they are doled out by the USSA Meneur or Commandant du jour. Currently, that is the Obama/Soros syndicate which is now acting as the US‘ Dictator-and-agitator-in-chief.
Reaping the Whirlwind of our Inattention
I and others began warning of the dissolution of our liberties and our nation years ago. With respect (and I use that word very gingerly) to Obama, I wrote my first no-holds-barred warning piece (“Is the USA Ready for an American Stalin?”) in October 2008. Tragically for our once-great nation and We-the-People, the “sheeple” who refused to vet the Obama on any level whatsoever voted him into office. As long as is possible, I will continue to warn that We-the-People must continue vote in unprecedented massive numbers, in order to counteract the voter fraud, intimidation and outright ballot stuffing that are inherent to the nature of all leftists. Due to the 2008 fiasco of electing an individual who is still ineligible to run for president of the United States (the latest Obama ‘birth certificate’ has been proved a forgery in almost every way possible), we are now fighting for our very lives and are reaping the whirlwind of our lack of attention to our own survival. If we continue in this way—as will the media—we will no longer exist and will eventually become only a footnote in history; telling of a foolish people who had the means to do so but, ultimately, refused to use them to save themselves.
The Past
While campaigning in 2008, then Senator (for a few months) Barack Hussein Obama told a then-adoring
world that he was for high gasoline prices for all Americans but, was mildly concerned about how fast they would rise. Then-Candidate for POTUS (who was and remains unvetted by the press, Democrats and RINOs) Obama said smiling that his energy plan would “necessarily cause prices to skyrocket.” During that presidential campaign, the Democrats demanded that McCain prove he was a Natural Born Citizen. He did. But, when Obama was asked to do the same thing the Harpies’ media began in earnest their disinformation and misdirection campaign of calling all that asked Obama to prove anything racists and they haven’t yet let up on that tactic. As Obama is half-black (and half-white by the way), we can now assume
that any black person born anywhere in the world can run for president of the US and ‘the US Constitution be damned’. And…it is being damned.
Thus far, Obama’s plans waged against the American people for skyrocketing prices on almost all levels is working well. Gas prices have gone through the roof, with some car rental agencies charging $9.00/Gal and the national average wavering between $3.89-over $4.00/Gal. The rising price of gas has, also, driven up prices on food, clothing and general merchandise. It’s now more expensive to produce and to ship them.
But, Obama—like all leftists who want only to destroy freedom and rule over their subjects—will still not allow definitive increased drilling for oil in the USA. Instead, he and his mentor George Soros are pushing Brazil’s oil drilling programs—and even helping to finance them while summarily continuing to gut the American economy! By the way, did you know Soros is heavily invested in Brazil? The media—who support Marxist-Leninist Obama at probably close to 99%—barely report anything about the demise of America—including largely yawning and ignoring the plight of the American people. The media have long been collaborators with leftist rulers but, the fawning over Obama—and disregard for the elimination of human resources and liberty under Obama—is unprecedented.
The Present
As one of the first US States to pass a police-state bill, Massachusetts’ reputation as ‘all Communist all the time’ shines like a bright penny. Passing its Storm-Trooper bill (aka Massachusetts’ ‘Pandemic Act of 2009’—st02028), under the guise of some pandemic or any to be determined “suspicious event” that State requires: “[On line 240] a fine of $1,000 against anyone who should have reported the above is addressed.” Then, on lines 351-360 of Section 95 it states that whenever the appropriate authorities determine there is a “disease or condition dangerous to the public health” the “owner or occupier of the premises” MUST permit entry and “the investigation of the premises” and “a reported disease or health condition — or suspicious
event — advise that he or she shall immediately notify the State Police.” No Fourth Amendment rights for Massachusetts. And I still ask what is this “suspicious event?”
As in third world countries, Tennessee police officers now openly and brazenly—as did the highwaymen of old—shake down out of state drivers for their money. And no one in authority even tries to stop them?
In the aforementioned Indiana case, Justice Steven David attempting to justify his position of eliminating the Fourth Amendment from Indiana wrote almost incomprehensibly: “We believe … a right to resist an unlawful police entry into a home is against public policy and is incompatible with modern Fourth Amendment jurisprudence,” David said. “We also find that allowing resistance unnecessarily escalates the level of violence and therefore the risk of injuries to all parties involved without preventing the arrest.” Resisting unlawful police entry into one’s own home is “against public policy and is incompatible with modern Fourth Amendment jurisprudence?” What are these Indiana Supreme Court “justices” smoking? Are these “justices” insane or simply following the dictates of their interim master Obama? Their decision not only eliminates a US citizen’s right to protection—under the law—from illegal search and seizure by the government but, effectively dissolves the 1215 Magna Carta! On top of all of this, we still have the TSA that is, also, performing illegal and patently pornographic searches on our bodies and the bodies of our children.
The Future
We are in dire trouble, America. The dangers in which we find ourselves wallowing are the ways in which our founders had warned against and anticipated and planned for with our Constitution and its Bill of Rights. The problem we face, however, is that we are being summarily decimated from within. Thus far, not one leader—and certainly no potential candidate for president of the USA—has come forth to actively support the Constitution of the United States of America. Instead, the RINO-run House of Representatives and Marxist-run (with establishment RINO support) continues to ignore our founding documents in favor of their own desires and wallets.
The question before us is: Are we ever going to fight back—a fight which may actually become bloody—or are we willing to live under tyranny and go back to being sheep? At this juncture, the Obama Syndicate’s tyranny appears to be winning and one thing is certain…We-the-People are not.

Police State 2011: Brian Reed Shot by MPD as Jesse Watson's Family Launches Wrongful Death Suit
From Modesto Anarcho
Monday, January 03 2011
As the clock ticked away at the seconds left to 2010 and a crew of us walked the streets of Downtown Modesto, many of us tonight involved with this project found it hard to enjoy ourselves. Because, as we walked, hoping to enjoy our buzz and being around so many Modestans, we knew that one person lay in the ground cold and another lay in the hospital. Because of the police.
The family of Jesse Eugene Watson announced in the December 29th edition of the Modesto Bee that the would be filling a wrongful death suit against the Modesto Police Department. Watson was chased by police because Watson's car "fit the description of a vehicle involved in a suspected break-in at Burnside Body Shop on North Franklin Street." Burnside Body Shop is owned by a member of the City Council. Police then chased Watson for seven miles, after which Watson crashed after being hit by a police car from behind, and then according to police, he then backed up toward them. 'Fearing for their lives,' the police open fired. In doing so, the police not only killed Watson, but also pumped his girlfriend with lead four times, injuring her critically. According to a police insider, "Blue Baton," police also managed to hit a parked police car, as well as a vehicle containing a woman and her young daughter, although they were luckily unharmed. According to the Modesto Bee, Watson's mother "has hired an attorney and plans to file a wrongful death lawsuit."
The Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department is 'investigating' the latest killing.
Another person shot dead for what? For matching a description? For daring to run from a police department that so many on these streets knows kills and murders at will? For fearing to be arrested by a corrupt police department and locked inside a jail where 6 people have brutally died in the last year for what would amount to a misdemeanor? Those that cheer on the cops in their latest act of brazen brutality support a department that stands on the bodies of scores of victims and behind a blue code of silence, murder, and deceit.
But as Modesto residents were just coming to grips with this latest murder, and as the Bee does backflips to avoid calling Watson a 'victim' and pat the police on the back, on the last day of 2010, the police shot their 8th victim in a year's time in Northeast Modesto (and the 14th in 3 years). The victim was Brian Reed, 41, who police shot after responding to a call of a man threating to commit suicide. This latest shooting mirrors the recent police murder of Francisco Moran in September of 2010, when police officer shot him in his East Modesto home armed only with a spatchula.
According to witnesses, two Modesto police officers entered Reed's home and found him with a knife. Police are not releasing information on the size or nature of Reed's knife, or if he even made threatening moves towards them with the knife (remember they were there on a call to HELP Reed because he was suicidal). Police then were reported to have asked the distraught Reed to "drop the knife" several times, after which he was shot at 6-8 times, according to neighbors who witnessed the attack. Soon after, Reed's wife and two children ran out of the home crying, "They just shot my dad." When police were asked by residents why they didn't use a taser to subdue Reed, they replied that, "Sometimes, tasers don't work."
In 2010, police shot dead Elizabeth Catherine Kropp, 43, in Modesto, after the mentally disturbed woman appeared on a school grounds cutting herself with a knife. After officers orders to stop fell on deaf ears, as the police responded in their most compassionate way possible - shooting Kropp to death. In January of 2009, Richie Robles, a 45 year old man with a samurai sword was also shot dead in Downtown Modesto in a similar circumstance.
It is clear that the police are not capable, willing, or even able to solve problems and help us - only in dishing out repression, control, and murder. We cannot count on them to tell the truth, only to lie and cover their own tracks. Nor can we count on the local government to absolve them, or the media to hold the accountable.
This is the second police involved shooting in Modesto since an attorney from Palo Alto began an
'investigation' into the police for brutality and corruption and we can be sure that their recent actions show that they indeed fear no reprimand from higher ups or from the government.
Only the people can bring justice. Only we can begin to come together and resist police murder and terror and begin to rely on each other to resolve conflicts and help one another. An investigation by outsiders of our community will only show what so many already no to be painfully true - the police are a murderous gang of thugs.
The following report on the Reed shooting comes from a community member of Hagstrom Court in Northeast Modesto, the area in which Reed was shot. It is painful and hard to read at times, as we come to realize that the police responding to the scene endangered the lives of many more than just Reed when they arrived that night, but also his family and community members. Rest in Peace to Jesse Watson. Rest in Peace to Brian Reed. Let 2011 be the year when we start to push back against our enemies in blue. Happy new year.
Eyewitness Account of Officer-Involved Shooting on Hagstrom Ct. Last Night: Neighborhood Considers Response Questionable
Neighbors of the man shot last night on Hagstrom Ct. last night are questioning the manner in which responding officers handled the difficult situation. The wife or domestic partner of the man shot reportedly called the police because her husband was disturbed and behaving erratically. As people were outside in the street, police vehicles entered the court at a high rate of speed, with one neighbor upset that his child was uncomfortably close to being hit by one of the cars. One police vehicle was travelling at such a high rate of speed that it overshot the house by eight houses after turning the corner before coming to a stop.
One eyewitness to the events said that after the police arrived, they heard them shouting for the individual to come out of the house. After the door opened, the officers observed that the individual was holding a knife, and ordered him to "Drop the knife" five times. At this time, the individual, who was said to be despondent and under the influence of inhalants, began moving toward the officers, at which time six shots were fired, with three hitting the individual.
At that point, the wife who had called ran out of the house screaming "Why did I call the police", and the couple's young daughter (around 10 years of age), ran to a neighbor's house shouting "They shot him, they shot him". When asked if it was her teen-aged brother, who has had contact with the law and has been on probation in the past (it was not stated if he is currently on probation), she cried out that "No, they shot my Dad". One of the neighbors heard a member of law enforcement later say that "He committed suicide by cop".
Neighbors who witnessed the shooting and its aftermath are understandably upset and emotional about the
shooting. While the house had been known by neighbors for police and probation officers stopping by to make contact and to do thorough probation-related searches of the house because of the man's teenaged step-son's contact with the law (the details of which are not known to the neighbors), the man who was shot maintained fairly civil relations with his neighbors, and though the regular police presence was not appreciated by those in the neighborhood, neighbors were not aware of the step-father of the teenager (and father of the little girl), having been involved with the law.
The general consensus among the neighbors who witnessed the shooting and its aftermath seems to be that between the initial contact with the man who was shot and the moment of the shooting, there was sufficient time to set up around the house and try tasing or other means of incapacitating the individual before outright shooting him.
When one of the officers was asked by one of the neighbors why they didn't try tasing him or using mace or capsicum spray before shooting the man, the officer responded " because tasing doesn't always work".
Another issue raised by the neighbors was that the ambulance had to park a distance from the scene, leading to the the paramedics having to to roll the stretcher from the ambulance to the scene, load the resident who was shot onto the stretcher, and then roll him back to the ambulance, rather than pulling right up to the scene, loading the individual onto the stretcher, and driving directly from the scene. The concern is that the time it took to roll the stretcher to and from the scene could be crucial in whether or not the individual survives the shooting or not.
The neighbors are now expressing not just shock at the shooting itself, but anger and fear at the immediacy of the shooting rather than attempting to subdue their neighbor with less-than-lethal means before shooting to kill. Could officers have positioned themselves so as to permit the use of the taser or other means and then shoot him if those methods didn't incapacitate him so that the officers could safely secure him?
Another issue raised by the neighbors was the youth of the officers present. Is this a factor to be considered when dealing with lethal situations? The impression in the neighborhood is that most of these officers were very young, and that possibly this was a factor in what is being viewed by many in the neighborhood as having jumped the gun in shooting him rather than opting for a non-lethal or less-lethal approach.
The question is, when faced with someone who is obviously disturbed and/or under the influence, what can be done to reduce the number of fatalities do to officer-involved shootings? This was a man of the home, a family man, and although the family had issues (how many of our families don't?), people in that small slice of Modesto are seeing themselves in him, and asking themselves at what point are they now able to call the police in the belief that the police will not only protect and serve those who have not committed crimes, but also, when necessary, protect and serve those in the community who need to be protected from themselves without paying the ultimate price?
Big Brother: America's Police State Mentality in the Electronic Age
By Prof. Rodrigue Tremblay
Global Research, January 1, 2011
“They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.”Benjamin Franklin (1706 - 1790), American inventor, journalist, printer, diplomat, and statesman (1775)
“Americans used to roar like lions for liberty; now we bleat like sheep for security.”Norman Vincent Peale (1898 –1993), American Christian preacher and author
"A Party member lives from birth to death under the eye of the Thought Police. Even when he is alone he can never be sure that he is alone. ...At the apex of the pyramid comes Big Brother. Big Brother is infallible and all-powerful. Every success, every achievement, every victory, every scientific discovery, all knowledge, all wisdom, all happiness, all virtue, are held to issue directly from his leadership and inspiration." George Orwell (1903-1950) (Eric Arthur Blair), (book: 1984)
“Since information gives power, access to personal files can lead to unreasonable pressures, even blackmail, especially against those with the least resources, people who depend upon public programs, for example. Big Brother isn't a camera. Big Brother is a computer.” C.J. Howard, political novel “Cybercash”
In 2049, when the 100th anniversary of the publication of George Orwell political novel “1984” will be celebrated, it will be recalled that the immediate post September 11, 2001 period marked the beginning of a gradual decline in personal liberty and freedom, especially in the United States but also elsewhere, and the emergence of a great information-obsessed Leviathan. Freedom rarely disappears in one fell swoop. Its disappearance is rather the end result of a thousand encroachments.
Pushed to the extreme and without clear democratic oversight, it becomes the mark of a totalitarian state,
when authorities feel that they never have enough information on the people. It is because information is power and state bureaucrats and politicians naturally like to be in control; on the one hand, releasing as little information about their own actions through an imposed secrecy, and on the other, accumulating as much information as possible about the citizens.
And today, modern governments have all the tools to transform their country into a creeping police state, more so now then ever before, in this electronic age. They have access to information technology that previous full-fledged “police state” governments could only have dreamed about.
Nowadays, with super computers and revolutionary new models to gather information and build databases, governments, i.e. bureaucrats and politicians, are in a position as never before to accumulate and correlate tremendous amounts of personal information on their citizens, from public (federal, state and local) as well as from a plethora of private sources. Government intelligence on each and every citizen is thus rendered much easier and, I would add, much more frightening. Indeed, the potential for abuse is enormous.
In 2002, for example, retired Vice Admiral John Poindexter proposed that the U.S. government create a tracking and monitoring system called "Total Information Awareness", in order for the U.S. government to gather information in a preventive way about individuals from widely varied sources, including tax records, telephone calling records, credit card charges, banking transactions, airline or ship reservations, and various biometric databases, without taking into consideration civil liberties or a citizens' right to privacy, the U.S. Privacy Act of 1974, or without having to request search warrants and without having to give prior notice to the persons involved. —The pretext was to allow the government to thwart possible terrorist activity, thus creating an unlimited appetite for information.
Well, there are clear signs that this massive data mining system on individuals is now solidly in place and is in full operation and can be expected to grow over time. George Orwell must be turning in his grave.
First, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s network of fusion centers, launched in 2003, has allowed the government to centralize a host of previously disparate information about Americans and foreigners alike, whether related to personal and business records, drivers licenses, local taxes, local infractions, police records, etc., through a host of coordinated information-sharing networks. (N.B.: The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) was established on November 25, 2002 and is the domestic equivalent of the Department of Defense.)
Secondly, central provisions of the USA Patriot Act, signed into law by President George W. Bush on October 26, 2001, allow the government to operate roving wire taps, search any individual’s business, personal, and even library records upon presentation of a national security letter, and spy on so-called "lone wolf" suspects, i.e., foreign nationals who have no known links to groups designated as terrorist. On this, the current Obama administration, by extending those provisions, is scarcely different than the previous Bush administration.
Thirdly, since passports and tight intelligence screening have been made a requirement for most international travel by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, since January 1, 2008, every individual traveling in and out of the United States has all his or her whereabouts and movements recorded so the government knows at all times his or her address and the places he or she has traveled to and from.
For instance, U.S. Transportation Security Administration's recent decision to use full-body airport X-ray scanners and full body groping at airports is another example where so-called security procedures are applied blindly and indiscriminately. There is more to come, since it has been announced that such invasive intelligence screening is coming to hotels and shopping malls, as well as to trains, buses and ports, etc.
These are some of the main features of the new government apparatus to gather information on people. There are many others. —Take for instance the requirement, since 2002, that all American high schools must give Pentagon military recruiters the names and contact information of all their juniors and seniors. Failure to comply on their part may result in the loss of government funding.
The logical next step for the U.S. government would be to follow a recent Italy's lead and outlaw outright the use of cash for most transactions, except for small ones, thus providing the government even more minute information about an individual's income, purchases and displacements. Nothing will escape the watching eye of the government in the electronic age. People will be filed, photographed and corralled.
Indeed, the way mass government surveillance systems are growing, by year 2020, chances are good that Americans will be living in a “Brave New World”!
—CYBER BIG BROTHER would know it all and it will be watching you.
United States To Advance Police State in 2011: Rights Denied at Airports Will Spread into Communities
by Kevin Parkinson
Saturday, January 1st, 2011
Cornwall, Ontario
Cornwall ON - The United States is using the strongest propaganda that it can muster, in order to get the population to submit to radical airport security measures.
During the last 12 months, the TSA in the U.S. has forced people using poisonous radiation, scanner machines, which have earned huge profits for members of the elite such as Michael Chertoff. This man used his position as Homeland Security Secretary to promote the use of the airport scanners, so that he could capitalize on the spending of millions of taxpayer dollars for his private gain when he left office.
There is no doubt that these scanners emit dangerous radiation, and are even more risky for children and pregnant women. But the Obama administration could care less. Staff who work close to these machines are also at risk of developing cancer after five years of continuous proximity to the scanners. If you doubt that, recall what your dentist does when taking an x-ray of your teeth. Firstly, he puts a metal apron over your vital organs to protect them, and he physically leaves the office while the x-ray is taken. I think the point is obvious; your dentist doesn’t want to be anywhere near the radiation.
The airport security plan is part of the overall goal to complete the last phases of the United States Police State, now on the verge of martial law. Janet Napolitano, the latest Homeland Security Czar, promises that scanners and personal searches will now be launched in ‘soft’ locations such as shopping malls, train and bus stations. Security is being ramped up to treat every American as a potential terrorist, guilty until proven innocent and contrary to the United States Constitution.
As the country is teetering on an economic collapse, with 12 states including Florida and Arizona, predicted to go into bankruptcy in 2011, the forecast is clear for those with their eyes open. These events will force Americans into the streets to voice their dissatisfaction against the endless corruption of the federal government. The housing collapse has thrown millions out of their homes and on food stamps, as the banks have used every imaginable and devious strategy to increase their profits.
For example, the banks are buying up the municipal tax bills that are in arrears, and then foreclosing on the
owners if they can’t pay exorbitant bank fees and charges. Municipalities, faced with drastically reduced tax bases, are conjuring up fictitious charges and surcharges to compensate for their dwindling tax base.
The federal government knows full well, that the fallout from the economic depression that the United States faces, can only be ‘handled’ by the jackboot of a Police State. Instead of extending the tax breaks to the corporations and the elite as the Obama administration has just done, the White House should have spoken up for the people. It’s all smoke and mirrors.
Obama should have terminated the tax cuts and introduced a modern “New Deal” economic program to offer a ray of hope for the poor and the working class people in the United States.
While Obama spends $1.5 million on a Christmas holiday in Hawaii with his family, it’s bread and water for the citizenry.
The airport security and the guerilla tactics being used are a huge smokescreen, a colossal hoax. There is no valid terrorist threat on the scale that the government is claiming. Remember also, that governments routinely ‘instigate’ situations that require a ‘solution.’ Law enforcement agencies have a history of bringing in ‘provocateurs’ to create incidents where they can come down with an iron fist. Most of these so-called terrorist threats are an ‘inside job’ such as the well-known and exposed ‘9-11’.
If the government agencies including TSA were genuinely interested in thwarting bomb carrying terrorists, why would they not look at the example of many other countries, which use trained dogs to sniff out hundreds of drugs with almost no interruption of service, and no effect on the 99.9999% of innocent travelers?
No, instead of used tried and true less intrusive measures, the United States comes in with the cancer causing, profit making scanning machines and the TSA gropers, to put ALL citizens on the defensive and in their place.
Airport security is where Americans are being denied their constitutional rights, and a dangerous precedent is being set to remove those rights. Once the public accepts this treatment and degradation, the situation will only get uglier.
Do a search of “FEMA” camps on the Internet, and you will find that hundreds of internment camps have been established for many years, even before Dubya. This is where the protesting citizens, the activists and the poor will be sent if they defy the elite.
There are so many comparisons to be made of the United States in 2011 and to the rise of Germany in the 30’s. They are unmistakable.
History repeats itself. Always.
The Stench of the Police State at US Airports
by Patrick Martin and Joe Kishore
Global Research, November 25, 2010
As tens of millions of Americans travel during the busy Thanksgiving holiday weekend, they will come face to face with the new regime instituted by the federal Transportation Security Administration. More than 70 major airports have installed full-body scanners, where randomly selected passengers are compelled to undergo the electronic equivalent of a strip search. Travelers who decline that scan will be subjected instead to an extremely invasive body search that includes an open-palm patdown of the genital area.
There are already reports of gross invasions of privacy and abuse of passengers. A flight attendant was forced to show her prosthetic breast during a patdown. An 8-year-old boy was forced to remove his shirt in Salt Lake City, although children under 12 are supposedly not subject to the intensified searches. A retired special education teacher from Lansing, Michigan was humiliated and left covered with his own urine after a TSA screener broke the seal on his urostomy bag while patting him down.
Many passengers have reacted to the patdowns as a form of sexual molestation. The depth of popular hostility is demonstrated by the informal boycott of the body scanners called for Wednesday, November 24, traditionally the busiest day of the year at airports. TSA director John Pistole was so concerned about the prospective boycott that he issued an appeal Monday against it, claiming it would “tie up people who want to go home and see their loved ones.”
The new measures, introduced by the TSA November 1, constitute an assault on core constitutional rights. The random full-body scans and/or patdowns are a systematic, across-the-board violation of the Fourth Amendment prohibition on unreasonable searches and seizures in which all those who are traveling are treated as potential terrorist threats.
Such methods have a logic of their own. If it is necessary to search any passenger on a plane in the most intrusive manner possible, similar justifications will be found for other forms of mass transportation—trains, buses, subways—as well as other venues where large numbers of people congregate, including malls, movie
theaters, or any sizeable workplace. The result is the creation of a police-state environment for the entire society.
Pistole cited the attempt by a Nigerian with explosives in his underwear to try to bring down an Amsterdam-to-Detroit flight last Christmas as a reason for the new search regime. Such justifications are a fraud. The entire “war on terror,” from the initial 9/11 terrorist attacks in 2001 to the most recent scare over cargo shipments from Yemen, is characterized by the unexplained and highly suspicious role of the American security apparatus, which has repeatedly acted in a fashion that suggests that it is promoting and facilitating terrorist provocations—which are then utilized to promote the military and foreign policy goals of American imperialism—rather than preventing them.
For example, the “underwear bomber,” Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, was allowed to board the flight despite the efforts of his father, a prominent Nigerian businessman, to tip off US authorities about his son’s potential connections to Islamic terrorists. The father visited the US embassy in Abuja, and a report was filed with the Department of State in Washington. This supposedly did not trigger an alert, despite the fact that US intelligence had uncovered reports of a Yemen-based terrorist plot using a Nigerian whose name might be “Umar Farouk.” The results of the affair have been twofold: a major increase in US military/intelligence operations in Yemen, and now the intensified domestic security screening at US airports.
None of the increasingly absurd and outrageous procedures instituted at airports have anything to do with making the population more “secure.” Rather, they are part of a massive increase in the power of the security apparatus, the framework of a police state in the US. From 9/11 on, first under Bush, now under Obama, the “war on terror” has been used as a catch-all justification for expanding domestic spying; instituting indefinite detention without charges; justifying executive assassination of anyone around the world, including US citizens; and employing torture. The climate of fear and intimidation cultivated at the borders and at the airports is part of this.
The response of the Obama administration to widespread complaints about the new procedures has been to act as though the White House was powerless to stop an agency whose director Obama himself appointed only a few months ago. Obama declared, “TSA in consultation with counterterrorism experts have indicated to me that the procedures that they have been putting in place are the only ones right now that they consider to be effective against the kind of threat that we saw in the Christmas Day bombing.”
Congressional Republicans, for their part, sought to exploit the popular hostility to the patdown searches by advocating extensive racial profiling at airports as an alternative. It was “political correctness” to put grandmothers, toddlers and the disabled through intensive screening, they argued, suggesting that Israeli-style methods of singling out target groups—young, non-white men, for example—should be employed instead. This avowedly racist approach leads to the same result as Obama’s: giving a green light to the unaccountable bureaucrats of TSA.
Both big business parties, Democrats and Republicans, are committed to expanding the power of the capitalist state, in its most overtly repressive form, the “armed bodies of men,” in Marxist terms. Ten years of bloody warfare since 9/11 have brought about an increasing brutalization of American society itself, as the American government now brings home the methods of Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo Bay, violence and humiliation, for use against the American population.
These police-state methods are not directed against “terrorism,” but at any opposition to the increasingly
unpopular policies of the financial aristocracy. The more farsighted sections of the ruling class understand very well that their policies of impoverishing the working class and ripping up social programs will lead to mass opposition, for which they have no answer but mass repression.
Moreover, police-state measures at home are a critical component of the preparation for new wars and imperialist adventures abroad. Each “terror scare” is tied to the promotion of the interests of American imperialism in key regions of the world, generally those that sit on top of vast quantities of oil and gas or straddle critical shipping routes.
All this is not to say that there is no danger of terrorist incidents. However, the principal source of this danger is the American government itself, which through its actions helps foment opposition and deep anger in the most far-reaching areas of the world. Despite the incessant panic mongering over terrorism, no one in the political establishment or media suggests the most immediate step necessary to dealing with the danger—putting an end to the bloody US wars in the Middle East and Central Asia.
In the final analysis, the increasing reliance of the US ruling elite on police-state methods, abroad and at home, demonstrates the impossibility of combining imperialism and democracy. American society is being ripped apart by profound social contradictions. Never has the gulf been so wide between the enormous wealth of the privileged elite, and increasing misery for the broad masses of the population.
The defense of democratic rights is inseparably bound up with the struggle to mobilize working people to defend their social rights, to jobs, decent living standards and public services. This requires the building of a mass revolutionary party of the working class, based on a socialist and internationalist program.
