Why Are We Waging War in the Middle East?

Vladimir Putin accuses US of backing terrorism in Middle East
Russian president tells gathering of politicians that Washington is playing a ‘double game’ and acting in self-interest
in Krasnaya Polyana

The Russian president, Vladimir Putin, has launched a stinging attack on US policy in the Middle East, accusing Washington of backing terrorism and playing a “double game”.
In a speech on Thursday at the annual gathering of the Valdai Club, a group of Russian and international analysts and politicians, Putin said the US had attempted to use terrorist groups as “a battering ram to overthrow regimes they don’t like”.
He said: “It’s always hard to play a double game – to declare a fight against terrorists but at the same time try to use some of them to move the pieces on the Middle Eastern chessboard in your own favour. There’s no need to play with words and split terrorists into moderate and not moderate. I would like to know what the difference is.”

Putin received Assad at the Kremlin on Tuesday, and on Thursday he underlined that he considered the Syrian president and his government to be “fully legitimate”. He said the west was guilty of short sightedness, focusing on the figure of Assad while ignoring the much greater threat of Isis.
“The so-called Islamic State [Isis] has taken control of a huge territory. How was that possible? Think about it: if Damascus or Baghdad are seized by the terrorist groups, they will be almost the official authorities, and will have a launchpad for global expansion. Is anyone thinking about this or not?”
He added: “Fifty years ago, the streets of Leningrad taught me that if a fight is inevitable, you have to hit first.”
Putin said it was “incorrect” to discuss whether or not Assad should step down, but said there was a need for dialogue.
“As far as I understand from my discussion with Assad, he’s ready for this,” said the Russian leader.
Putin said he asked Assad how he would react if Russia “found armed opposition groups who are really ready to fight terrorists” in Syria and decided to support them. Assad responded positively, according to Putin.
Asked how he saw the future of Syria and whether partition of the country could be an eventual solution, Putin said: “This would be the worst and most unacceptable option, and will not lead to the conflict being solved. It will make it worse and give it a permanent character. If you split the country into different parts they will fight among themselves forever, it will be unavoidable.”
This year the Valdai Club met at a luxury hotel in the mountain resort of Krasnaya Polyana, one of the venues for last year’s Winter Olympics. Putin arrived at the venue in a bright green Lada, part of an effort to promote the domestic car industry. He arrived late, keeping the assembled delegates waiting for nearly two hours before speaking.

“Such a high level of approval for the work of the Russian president is linked, in the first instance, to events in Syria, to Russian airstrikes on terrorist positions there,” said the stat-run polling agency VTsIOM.
On the sidelines of the Valdai Club conference, Russia’s ambassador to the UK, Alexander Yakovenko, said the “only logical way” to explain Britain’s behaviour in Iraq and Syria was a desire that Isis would depose Assad.
“The idea was to remove Assad using force, and to use force to seize Damascus. I don’t believe in conspiracy theories, but this is the only way to explain why de facto neither Britain nor the US has ever properly fought against Isis,” Yakovenko said.
He said with the number of airstrikes Britain had carried out in Iraq, “you could have destroyed the whole region”, but instead Isis had only grown in strength.
An analysis by Reuters of Russian defence ministry data showed this week that almost 80% of Russia’s declared targets in Syria have been in areas not held by Isis. Yakovenko said he had a meeting at the Foreign Office in London last week in which he asked for intelligence to be shared on the location of Isis targets in Syria, but was rejected. He also asked for information on the Free Syrian Army.
“We are looking closely at the Syrian Free Army. We understand there is not a single command centre, and that some of these divisions have different goals. But if among the FSA there are divisions that are really ready to fight with Isis, who is our main enemy in Syria, and if you think there are people or commanders or other contacts which could be useful and to cooperate with them, we would be grateful for such information,” he said. “We were again rejected.”

Global Peace and Security: Waging “War on Terrorism” in the Middle East Even as We “Embody Terrorism”

Global Research, October 20, 2015
We are waging war on terrorism even as we embody terrorism. No wonder we seem sometimes to be at war with ourselves, and have been for most of the 21st century….. No American under 12 has Lived in a Country at Peace…whatever the U.S. government knows, or thinks it knows, is not widely shared with most of its citizens….. The American Enemies List Is Decided Anonymously and Secretly. William Boardman (America a country at war with an Illusion”).
Wars and societal conflicts do not end with political statements. The mankind is fraught with painful experiences of the unwanted Two World Wars. The perpetrators escape the consequences pushing humanity into unthinkable disasters generations after generations. A war of words and conveniently arrived erotic hypothesis of the few sadistic warlords on complex global issues are draining out the positive energies, time and opportunities for peaceful dialogue towards conflict prevention and conflict management.
If Israel and the PLO had moral and intellectual capacity to talk and reconcile, the killings and stabbing of innocents could have been averted by ending the occupation and coming to terms with the two state solution. While Israelis and Palestinians live in open prisons of mutual fear and hatred, their leaders compete for numbers in opinions polls and are unable to provide proactive leadership role for conflict resolution. Likewise, the sectarian conflicts in Syria and Iraq require moral and intellectual foresights and creative strategies to strike peaceful conclusion. Ironically, America, Russia and a few West Europeans are competing in bombing the civilians and causing unthinkable losses of life and destruction of human infrastructures across the Arab world.
Is the UN just a Spectator?
Under the UN Charter, the member states are prohibited to intervene in the internal affairs of another member state. The hard lessons learned from the 2nd WW are flagrantly ignored by the leading superpowers. None of the leading aggressors care about the UN principles and obligations to support global security and peace. Russia and the US and other hired allies are bombing Syria and Iraq and other areas of the Arabian heartland. The displacement of people and forcible expulsion of civilian population is reminiscent of the Palestinian expulsion in 1948. The continuous bombing of Syria and Iraq is destroying the environment and the productive earth for ever.
Do the Superpowers care about human life and sustainability of futuristic generations? The ISIL excuse is self- deceptive and on paper only. At issue is the extension of military operations to safeguard the Bashar Al- Assad dictatorship in Syria and to further disintegrate the Arab states adjoining Syria and Iraq.
What should have been alarming to the UN Security Council is not even discussed in the current sessions. Ostensibly, UNO is powerless without the participation of the five permanent members of the Security Council. Ironically, how irrational is the systematic built-in inequality whereby the UN Charter calls for equality of all the member states. Large scale forcible displacement of refugees and unprotection of civilian population, sectarian warmongering and daily aerial bombings of Syria and Iraq draw no challenge from the UN leadership – the body responsible for global peace and security.
Why the UN Security Council cannot intervene and stop the emerging bloodbath between Israel and Palestine? The UN is obliged to workout two states solution between Israel and Palestine. The call is urgent to have peacemakers on the ground to restore normalization of human affairs when animosity is inflicting inhuman policies and behaviors. What if the US and Britain come out of the political cynicism and make a genuine call to end the occupation and arrange the two states co-existence? Has the UNO been a futile experiment in modern history? Has the UNO been just a window dressing to deceive and destroy the mankind all over the world? Is it the right time to plan and initiate another international organization made up of the citizens of the globe and responsible to the people of the globe rather than hypothetical phenomenon of the states?
Warriors are Competing to Inflict Maximum Deaths and Destruction on the Arab People and Habitats
Across America and the EU political and economic powerhouses, common citizens were led to believe that America and EU as one powerful group of influential agents possessing unchallenging strength in global power and intelligence hub, not necessarily marginalized by Russia or any other countries in the world. If Russia would dare to challenge the American-EU strategic psyche, the invincible armies would rush to challenge the Russian might and interference. Courageously, President Putin has marched into Syria and Iraq to counteract the US policies and operations.
If this is not humiliating to the US and the EU military stance, what else could be defined as an insult to common sense? Could President Obama and the Europeans accept Putin as winner before losing the face in a politically sensitive global culture? If this is not shameful, how else could they lead when they are victims of their own obsession and a failure on the competing war front? It was widely held that after the collapse of the former USSR, American would not tolerate any rising challenge to its principal objective of strategic hegemony all over the globe.
How much more America and its allies could lose once Russia achieves its policy aims in just few weeks comparing to what the US and coalition could not attain in five years. One obvious outcome is clear that Western strategic interests are not at risk as long as deaths and destruction are inflicted on the Arab people and their habitats. This is what facilitates the meeting of minds to which the Arab leaders could never understand. They are willfully an object of annihilation sooner than later. Global politics is fast becoming a chronic sickness embracing heinous crimes and political wickedness to conduct international affairs.
Felicity Arbuthnot (“Syria: Russian Intervention Exposes Coalition Lies.” Global Research: 10/7/2015), is an award winning international journalist with special knowledge of Iraq. Author, with Nikki van der Gaag, of Baghdad in the Great City series for World Almanac books, and she provides a descriptive imagery of the prevalent realities:
A mirror image of Basra, Iraq, exactly ten years ago, September 2005, when British Special Forces, dressed in Arab clothing, were arrested by Iraqi police in an explosive laden car. Had the car detonated, “Iraqi insurgents” would, of course, have been blamed. The British military demolished the police station in order to free the would-be bombers.  How many were not caught and “insurgency” for which Iraqis were blamed, killed, tortured, was actually “made in Britain” and the US, as Syria now?……. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov is anything but selective about the head chopping, culture erasing monsters besieging Syria – CIA trained or not – stating last week: “If it looks like a terrorist, if it acts like a terrorist, if it walks like a terrorist, if it fights like a terrorist, it’s a terrorist, right?  Syria, from lies, to heartbreak, to cultural destruction has become a microcosm of the demented, ridiculous “war on terror.” The lies and subterfuge to justify the horror have become more desperate but only the most obtuse can avoid noticing that terrorists R US.
How to Rethink of Wars and Stop Insanity against the Mankind?
To dispel pride and prejudice, the global community prefers a new approach to tackle the current political problems. When facts of life warrant a change, concerned intelligent leaders must find navigational change. The Arab leaders are victims of their own authoritarian obsession enhanced by militarization of the region and being puppets to the Western policy aims. Their political incapacity is joined by complacency, and the outcome is the worst combination of loss of human life, foreign aggression and destruction of the environment. This has impact on degeneration and failure to resolve the Palestine conflict with Israel.  The oil-generated economic prosperity was used by the West to destroy the inner consciousness, moral and intellectual heritage of the Arab people.
Their egoistic instinct facilitated foreign interventions to undermine the societal peace and sectarian harmony. Sigmund Freud (Civilization and its Discontents, 1930) noted it correctly:
“the inclination to aggression is an original self-subsisting instinctual disposition in man, and that it constitutes the greatest impediment to civilization.”
The aggression of wars goes on unabated across the Arab Middle East. Those claiming to be concerned with hydrocarbon emissions and greenhouse effects on the planet must realize that they are committing heinous crimes against the humanity by bombing and using chemical weapons in Syria and Iraq. The need is urgent to establish a new global organization of the people, by the people and for the people. Such an effort should be a rational approach to replace the UNO debating club. This should provide hope and optimism to the present and future generations to imply means and strategies befitting to the aspirations of the global humanity. All wars have ripple effects for the mankind.
There is growing trend of “Big Thinking” in American politics and policies. Throughout its evolving history of over two centuries, the US government has been continuously engaged in more than 220 wars. What a tragedy and loss to human thinking, intellect and values – Immanuel Kant, Thomas Paine, Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, Shakespeare and Bertrand Russell and their souls put to tormenting torture – the treatment they did not deserve from George Bush, Barrack Obama, Dick Cheney, Tony Blair and Rumsfeld and so many others full of embittered conscious and cancerous ego to annihilate the mankind.
Confronting the major paradoxes of history as Arnold Toynbee (A Study of History), described warriors as dreamers devoid of moral and intellectual imagination… when they come close to stagnation they jump to irrational outbursts and conclusions about the facts of life. Wrong people, glued to wrong thinking, do the wrong things without any rational sense of time, people’s interest and history. If the human nature is in part wicked and in part foolish, how can human beings be prevented from suffering of the result of their own wickedness and folly?”
Robert Briffault (The Making of Humanity, London, 1918), Professor at Cambridge University, the 20th century proactive scholar offers a rational context to the sadistic warriors of the 21st century:
The hell of human suffering, evil and oppression is paved with good intentions. The men who have most injured and oppressed humanity, who have most deeply sinned against
it, were according to their standards and their conscience good men; what was bad in them, what wrought moral evil and cruelty, treason to truth and progress, was not at all in
their intentions, in their purpose, in their personal character, but in their opinions.

Global War and Peace: Insanity's Quagmire

By rowan on November 4, 2014
By Dr. Mahboob A. Khawaja
[I]n a knowledge-based age, the contemporary world is fraught with perpetuated violence and killings that undermine the sustainability of mankind's future. Complex societal conflicts need rational and flexible strategies using men of new ideas, diplomacy, and peaceful means of conflict management. War is not a prelude to peacemaking. The sadistic warriors - the global warlords - are using obsessive power to victimize the global humanity. In the latest issue of Foreign Policy, Tim Roemer ("The Threats We Forget" Foreign Policy: 10/24/2104) notes the remarks of the new Geneva-based UN High Commissioner for Human Rights comparing the Islamic State and Ebola as the ""twin plagues" unleashed upon the world. IS, the terrorist group which is gaining territory in Iraq and Syria and trying to create a "house of blood"; and Ebola, which is spreading in West Africa and other parts of the world, are "two monumental crises" that the world must face together."
While the Ebola crisis is adequately considered by the global community, ISIL and Badr groups (Iranian led Shia group) are mishandled by the US and
European leaders. There is a factual dichotomy that the UNHR Commissioner statement does not clarify. The ISIL did not grow out of the nowhere. The US and its allies have failed to imagine the ripple effects of their own follies and continued aggressive war and prolonged occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan. ISIL and Badr group and several others are all active in daily sectarian genocidal acts across Iraq and Syria. So are the US and its allies launching bombing campaigns and killing thousands and thousands of innocent civilians. Several millions of Arab refugees scattered around helplessly are the direct results of this insanity forged on the common people. President Obama and other Western complacent leaders do not touch the facts of this prevalent global madness aimed at dismantling and occupying the entire Oil-producing Arab region. Undoubtedly, Tim Roemer ("The Threats We Forget" Foreign Policy: 10/24/2104) points out that: The world is an unpredictable place right now -- and things could grow worse. The Islamic State might quickly escalate geopolitical problems in the Middle East, destabilize Jordan or Turkey, and begin a more systematic export of radicalized fighters around the world. That is why the United States needs to take immediate and bipartisan action against these threats.
Western Hypocrisy or Emerging "Jihadist" Challenge
Do the Islamic societies breed jihadis or does the US-led bogus war on terrorism produced reactionary jihadists? Where do the "Jihadists" come from? Most North American and West European intelligence establishments operate "Jihadi" watch websites to alert the public consciousness of the on-going war on terrorism. It is a one-way descriptive fantasy of the jihadi alarm bell. All of the Jihadis groups are fighting reactionary wars against American-led wars in Afghanistan, Iraq and across the Arab world. They owe their existence to American strategic warfare policies and practices. To counteract the former USSR occupation of Afghanistan in 1979, The US State Department and CIA envisaged, created and trained Al-Qaida organization. The "Jihadi" group was financed and led by the US armed forces personnel to fight against the former USSR installed Afghan Communist regime.
How strange the US excelsior club of "Jihadi" movement does not come to terms with the contemporary radical "Jihadists" ideology based in Iraq and Syria? The accused radical groups continue to use the US shared knowledge, equipment and tactics to fight in the Iraq-Syrian war theaters. Could an ideology be defeated with guns and bullets? All of the Jihadis were used by the Western nations in ideological conflict zones. But once they became a liability, they were abandoned and called as terrorists. While the US is bombing the innocent civilian population in Iraq-Syria-Yemen, these radical jihadi enterprises are
attracting more recruitment minds and souls in the same war theatres. Tim Roemer ("The Threats We Forget" Foreign Policy: 10/24/2104) shares a willing suspicion of the disbelief: Islamic groups are enticing and successfully attracting women to join jihad.......Over the past decade, al Qaeda has become more decentralized and dangerous. The Obama administration has efficiently destroyed and degraded their leadership, yet because they are nimble, flexible, and resilient they have spread to more than a dozen countries and reconstituted themselves.
Certainly, a disconnect appears prominent in what the US policy proclaims and what is being done on the ground. The wrong people, with wrong thinking are engaged in doing the wrong things. The radicalized jihadi groups are the means by which the US war economy and West Europeans maintain their manipulation of ideas and ideals to support the continuous military interventions.
Political Deceptions and Lies of the War on Terrorism
All the monsters of history are to be found among the absolute leaders exercising absolute power in disregard of the interests of people. Since the Washington-based major military-industrial war complex orchestrated the bogus War on Terrorism, American politics in one-sided to unfold unthinkable futuristic disasters. Glenn Greenwald ("The 'War on Terror' - by Design - Can Never End. The Guardian: 1/4/2013"), shares a foresight in time and place to make us think hard about the future:
There's no question that this "war" will continue indefinitely. There is no question that US actions are the cause of that, the gasoline that fuels the fire. The only question - and it's becoming less of a question for me all the time - is whether this endless war is the intended result of US actions or just an unwanted miscalculation. Why would anyone in the US government or its owners have any interest in putting an end to this sham bonanza of power and profit called "the war on terror"? ....But the notion that the US government is even entertaining putting an end to any of this is a pipe dream, and the belief that they even want to is fantasy. They're preparing for more endless war; their actions are fueling that war; and they continue to reap untold benefits from its continuation.
all. Guilt by accusation is policy. Diktat authority has final say.... War on terror priorities breached First, Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Amendment freedoms.
Arguably, conflicts generate mistrust and drain out all positive human energies and thinking for peaceful change, and transformation to sustainable future and productivity. Is it hard for Obama administration to understand this truth? Bill Moyers and Michael Winship ("The Lies that will Kill America" 10/25/2013), know well there are more dangerous enemies within America than elsewhere and do not pretend to act like politicians in Washington:
Such ignorance will kill democracy as surely as the big money that funds and encourages the media outlets, parties and individuals who spew the lies and hate. The ground is all too fertile for those who will only believe whatever best fits their resentment or particular brand of paranoia. It is, as an old song lyric goes, "the self-deception that believes the lie." The truth will set us free; the lie will make prisoners of us all.
To cover up their secretive and unhealthy minds, the US policy makers continue to lie and deceive the well informed global mankind. Societies evolve and progress when they are open to rational communications and enjoin cooperation and mutual respects, not conflicts and illegal and immoral intelligence spying as stumbling blocks. "Is America at war with itself and that war is illusion" wonders William Boardman ("A Country At War With An Illusion." Information Clearing House: 8/19/2013):
"We are waging war on terrorism even as we embody terrorism. No wonder we seem sometimes to be at war with ourselves, and have been for most of the 21st century..... No American under 12 Has Lived in a Country at Peace...whatever the U.S. government knows, or thinks it knows, is not widely shared with most of its citizens..... The American Enemies List Is Decided Anonymously and Secretly."
How to Decode Insanity into Rationality?
Wars are planned by insane minds and sadistic political strategists. Wars kill people, dehumanize the civic culture and destroy the human habitats and undermine the natural environment to support life. There is not a single historic reference to indicate if wars were a prelude to peacemaking. The hourly paid Western news media intellectuals propagate and misinform the masses that Islamic terrorism is threatening the Western nations and their security, values and living standards. After the 9/11, George Bush used to contend "they hate our freedom." Outside America, no impartial observer believes that America enjoys political freedom or the capacity to make public-interest based foreign policy. The Washington-based political lobbyists and the powerful industrial-military complex set the US foreign policy agenda and conduct the warfare
From George W. Bush, Tony Blair (Former UK PM), Dick Cheney, Rumsfeld, Condeleeca Rice, Richard Pearly and all other conspirators and liars onward to Barrack Obama, all have consumed precious time and opportunities to cause massive deaths and destruction across the globe. Most probably, they will escape moral and political accountability. Were they not responsible for the longest bogus wars against the innocent people in Afghanistan and Iraq? Were they not the cruelest people to set up Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq, Belgram prison in Afghanistan and the Gunantamobay? These were not the hallmarks of human freedom, liberty, democracy and justice. Do you wish to see the portrait of their achievements out of the latest holocaust against the mankind? ("US Sponsored Genocide against Iraq 1990-2012 killed 3.3 million including 750,000 children." Global Research: 12/06/2012). It might be hard for any morally and intellectual conscientious American policy maker to see the mirror. How dare you claim that the "jihadists" are waging war against the Western nations and their civilizations? You are the reason for the emergence of radicalized "jihadists" throughout the globe.
The ISIS group owes its origin to the US strategy and military intervention in Iraq. American and British leaders infested Iraqi culture with coerced sectarian divides and violence. But after the facts, America and some of its European allies fear of a less engaged role and cumbersome futuristic domination of the oil enriched Iraq and the neighboring Saudi Arabia and UAE. They want to contain the ISIS now ISIL as an Islamic Caliphate- governing body of the conquered regions in Iraq and Syria. ISIL is one of the composite groups fighting to overthrow the authoritarian regimes, do not pose any direct threat to challenge the US-British homeland security or sovereignty. American and Europeans do not seem to be bothered by the bloody sectarian rampage carried out by the Badr group sponsored by Iran and fighting against the Sunnis in Iraq. They just want to bomb ISIL because it claims to be an Islamic State. Other Islamic States and Badr Shia groups are not critical issues to American mindset.
One wonders, if there is a cure to a cruel mindset? But absolute political power cannot be justified as simple favorable perversion to torture, kill the innocent mankind and destroy the universal harmony and natural habitats on Earth. Should all the political leaders take a space journey and view the 10,000 mile per hour orbiting planet Earth and try to understand its operational existence and governance by its Creator and the vitality of human life and habitats. Do these leaders have the capacity to learn from scientific observations? If not, how could they be leaders to lead the 21st century informed humanity? What is the cure to raging indifference and cruelty to the interests of the people of the United States and for that matter the whole of the mankind? Professor P.L Thomas (Furman University, South Carolina) speaks out loud and clear ("Obama's Failed Hope and Change: "Forget the Politicians. They are Irrelevant." Speak Out: 9/04/2013):
Forget the politicians. They are irrelevant. The politicians are put there to give you the idea that you have freedom of choice. You don't. You have no choice! You have owners! They own you. They own everything. They own all the important land. They own and control the corporations. They've long since bought, and paid for the Senate, the Congress, the state houses, the city halls, they got the judges in their back pockets and they own all the big media companies, so they control just about all of the news and information you get to hear....They want more for themselves and less for everybody else, but I'll tell you what they don't want: They don't want a population of citizens capable of critical thinking. They don't want well informed, well educated people capable of critical thinking. They're not interested in that. That doesn't help them. That's against their interests.
If the leaders of a powerful nation like the US are not flexible and intelligent
enough to realize the attributes of the 21st century effective leadership and be able to know and manage their comparative political strengths and weaknesses, how could they deal with the futuristic global challenges of security and peacemaking? Would the sky fall upon the White House or the Pentagon or the planet Earth dwindle if America will use dialogue and diplomacy to communicate with the ISIL and other groups rather than war and bombing the civilians in Iraq-Syria? American political psyche failed to imagine peace as the core aim of the informed mankind; instead investing heavily in more wars and military interventions causing massive civilian deaths and destruction of the Arab Middle East. General Allen foresees a continuing war without an end. But at the end, there got to be a meeting place for a negotiated settlement. The mindless Arab authoritarian have no accountability to the people of the Arabian Peninsula. American politicians are bankrupt in moral and intellectual pursuits and indeed buried under $17. Trillion of financial deficits. Do the Arab coalition leaders have American warranty for their continued authoritarian governance? Did they not watch the video how Saddam Hussein was hanged by the American agents in Baghdad? Or are they that foolish not to recall how Ghaddafi was murdered by the 'jihadis' armed and supported by the Obama administration? Have the Arab rulers solved any of the important problems confronting the Arab masses over half of a century? Was the freedom of Palestine not the core of political issues to be addressed by the Arab leaders? Was it not more important to normalize relations with the State of Israel and establish an independent State of Palestine and free the Al-Aqsa mosque? Bashar- al-Assad was a problem three years ago; he is still in office after killing millions and displacing three millions or so Syrian refugees. American plans are at work, but the Arabs have no plan or sense of time and history how the future will unfold for them. Would the oil exporting Arab leaders buy moral and intellectual integrity, honor and peace with petro-dollars? The so called military coalition of the dead-conscious puppet Arab leaders cannot be a moral and intellectual force to challenge the Master over its aggressive plans - more bombing, more deaths and destruction of the natural environment and ultimate surrender and occupation of the oil producing Arab nations. Woh!, surely, it looks strange democracy at work.
