Cardinal Collins: Prime Minister Trudeau, your $650 million abortion fund won’t help women (Full Text)
Thomas Cardinal Collins

Thomas Cardinal Collins at Notre Dame Basilica, Ottawa, prior to the 2016 National March for Life.
Editor's note: The following is the complete text of a letter sent by Cardinal Thomas Collins of Toronto to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on March 10, 2017. The letter was in response to Trudeau's announcement that the Canadian government would be spending $650 million to support so-called "sexual and reproductive health programs," including efforts to legalize abortion in countries where it is currently illegal.
Dear Prime Minister Trudeau,
I am writing to express my deep concern and disappointment at your government’s decision to provide $650 million to support “sexual and reproductive health programs” globally. While it is commendable and necessary to foster initiatives that further the rights of women and young girls worldwide, your public comments suggest that unless a woman has access to abortion or contraception, she is not empowered or able to realize her full potential.
I simply remind you and your colleagues that we have no rights at all unless we are afforded the right to life. That decision was made for you and for each one of us by a woman, determined and committed to bring a new life into this world.
It is praiseworthy to offer international aid; it is arrogant for powerful, wealthy nations to dictate what priorities developing countries should embrace. Pope Francis has cautioned the rich and powerful West against the danger of “ideological colonization,” in which such countries and organizations offer funding to help further a particular social agenda. Do we empower women by making sex selective abortions more accessible? Money spent on promoting abortion and contraception could be spent on vaccinating millions of women and girls against malaria or other diseases. $650 million could help build a lot of schools or universities, pathways to knowledge for future female leaders of our world.
Our country could learn from a number of inspiring examples of outreach and care that support women worldwide. Very often these programs are offered by faith-based, non-governmental organizations, which are usually the first to arrive and the last to leave any area of crisis or need. They understand the reality of the local situation, and respect the dignity of the people who live there.
Canada is blessed with prosperity and a wealth of resources. Surely we can do better than imposing a distorted vision of the empowerment of women on the people of countries that deserve our support to respond effectively to the challenge of their most pressing needs.
I would welcome the opportunity to speak with you regarding this critically important issue
Sincerely yours,
Thomas Cardinal Collins

Was Sophie’s Instagram Justin’s abortion cover?
Trudeau using Canadian tax dollars to underwrite a global culture of death
By Judi McLeod —— Bio and Archives
March 13, 2017
Did Sophie Gregoire Trudeau get away with providing cover for her husband Canada Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s back in her ‘Let’s hear it for the boys!’ Instagram sent out on the eve of International Women’s Day?
Gregoire’s jaw-dropping Instagram was said by mainstream media to have “set off a firestorm” among feminists on the march celebrating ‘A Day Without Women’ events.
It was the day after without media fanfare, when self-described “feminist” Prime Minister Trudeau and his Liberal Government made their $650 million commitment “to increase global access to abortion”  in third world countries, which Canada’s bishops tag as “a reprehensible example of Western cultural imperialism” that “exploits women.”
Gregoire grabbed limelight on International Women’s Day by encouraging “girls and women” to celebrate the men in their lives, and held onto the spotlight by asking Instagram users “to take a picture holding hands with their “male ally” and share it using the hashtag #TomorrowInHand.
sophiegregoiretrudeau: Are you ready to ignite change? This week, as we mark International Women’s Day, let’s celebrate the boys and men in our lives who encourage us to be who we truly are, who treat girls & women with respect, and who aren’t afraid to speak up in front of others. Take a picture holding hands with your male ally & share it on social media using the hashtag #TomorrowInHand. Together, we can create a movement that inspires more men to join the fight to build a better tomorrow with equal rights & opportunities for everyone… because #EqualityMatters.
Equality for everyone, that is, other than for helpless aborted babies.
With no snow on the walkway where the photo was taken, the Trudeaus are depicted wearing sturdy snow boots and holding hands in a picture that is obviously posed.
The real battle boots were on the ground in a pro-abortion bomb released by the Canadian Liberal Government.
No one has a better grasp on marketing than ‘Selfie King’ Prime Minister Trudeau, who by following everything Obama since Obama’s election team helped instal him as prime minster, has reached the heady status of ‘progressive world leader’, the current claim being made on his behalf.
“On International Women’s Day, Trudeau announced his Liberal government will spend $650 million over three years to “address gaps in sexual and reproductive health and rights in the world’s poorest and most vulnerable communities.” (LifeSiteNews, March 10, 2017).
The bishops caught the Trudeau-led Liberals in the words of their own press releases:
“…But in an open letter to Trudeau released Friday, the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) pointed to a government media background document. It stated that “a major part of the funding will be toward removing ‘judicial and legal barriers to the fulfillment of sexual and reproductive health and rights’.”
“The bishops also cited a March 8,  17 Globe and Mail article reporting a federal official had confirmed “these barriers include the anti-abortion laws in many countries.”
“Such a policy is a reprehensible example of Western cultural imperialism and an attempt to impose misplaced but so-called Canadian ‘values’ on other nations and people,” wrote the bishops.
“It exploits women when they are most in need of care and support, and tragically subverts true prenatal health care,” read the letter signed by CCCB president Bishop John Crosby of Hamilton.
“It negates our country’s laudable efforts to welcome refugees and offer protection to the world’s homeless, when the youngest of human lives will instead be exterminated and the most vulnerable of human beings discarded as unwanted human tissue,” the bishops wrote.
“The bishops concluded their letter by telling Trudeau:
“Your policy and vision, contrary to the fundamental ethic of protecting the most vulnerable and assisting the weakest, are in conflict with the principles instinctively shared by the majority of the world’s population and consistently upheld by the Catholic Church: to defend and protect human life from conception to natural death.”
“Campaign Life Coalition vice president Jeff Gunnarson lauded the forceful statement.
“The bishops have courageously exposed Trudeau’s so-called feminism for what it really is: an exploitation of the world’s most vulnerable women,” Gunnarson said.
“They also implicitly reveal Trudeau’s arrogance by rebuking his ‘Western cultural imperialism’,” he added.
“Trudeau is convinced he knows what’s best for women around the world, and so he doesn’t even bother to ask women in developing countries what they need and want,” Gunnarson said. “He’s using Canadian tax dollars to underwrite a global culture of death.”
No Selfie can ever hide the fact that Prime Minister Trudeau, a Catholic, sent $650 million Canadian tax dollars to foreign countries “to increase global access to abortion”.
Meanwhile, some women mark International Women’s day by going on the march and wearing red.
Some women stay back sending out attention-grabbing Instagrams that are really at heart, distractions to cover the backs of self-admitted “feminist” husbands like Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Abortion funding: Canada's Liberals will help fill global gap from Trump's ban
International development minister says women have the right to choose if and when they have children
By Mike Blanchfield,
The Canadian Press Posted: Mar 02, 2017
International Development Minister Marie-Claude Bibeau has pledged up to $20 million for contraceptives, family planning and comprehensive sexuality education, and access to post-abortion care, as countries scramble to make up for the loss of U.S. international development funding tied to abortion-related projects. (Justin Tang/Canadian Press)
The federal government is pledging up to $20 million to fund sexual health and family planning initiatives as part of an international campaign to fill a gap created by President Donald Trump's decision to ban U.S. funding for abortion-related projects.
The money will go to five organizations, including the International Planned Parenthood Federation, and be spent in the coming 12 months.
In a release, the government says the money will go towards contraceptives, family planning and comprehensive sexuality education, and access to post-abortion care.
International Development Minister Marie-Claude Bibeau said in a statement that all women have the right to choose whether and when they want to have children, and how many.
A major aid agency said it would welcome any financial help Canada can provide, but warned that if the country is really serious about helping poor women in the developing world, it must increase the overall amount it spends on international aid in the upcoming federal budget.
Lauren Ravon, Oxfam's Canadian director of policy and campaigns, says Canada's decision to take part in Thursday's pledging conference in Brussels — known as "She Decides" — is a welcome effort.
Bibeau represented Canada at the meeting, where some 50 countries are trying to raise $600 million to fill the shortfall caused by Trump's decision.
Ban reversed Obama decision
One of Trump's first acts as president was to bring back a policy withholding hundreds of millions of dollars per year from groups that perform abortions or provide advice about the procedure.
The ban has been instituted by successive Republican administrations dating back to the Ronald Reagan era in 1984, only to be rolled back by successive Democratic presidents since then.
Trump's order reversed Barack Obama's 2009 decision to restore funding.
The Trudeau government made a similar decision after winning power in 2015 by allowing funding for family planning in projects related to the maternal newborn child health, the signature aid project of the previous Harper government.
The Conservatives also banned funding to abortion-related services, but the Trudeau government lifted that ban while deciding to carry forward with the aid initiative.
The Liberals have not committed to raising Canada's overall aid budget, which stands at less than 0.3 per cent of gross national income. That's significantly less than the 0.7 per cent target that the United Nations has set.

Bibeau and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau have said it is unlikely Canada can come up with a plan to meet that target because it would involve a massive infusion of new funds into the aid budget, as much as $10 billion.
Ravon said organizations such as Oxfam want to see an overall increase in Canada's aid budget.
"Whatever announcement Minister Bibeau makes is great; there is such a shortfall in funding," she said in an interview. "(But) we're seeing that Canada's aid budget is actually at an almost all-time low.
"One-off announcements are important. But we'd really like to see a major increase in the federal budget for development assistance."
'Apply a feminist lens'
The Liberals are expected to release their latest budget in the coming weeks. Bibeau has overseen the completion of a major review of Canada's development strategy, but has not released it.
Supporting women and girls "will be at the heart" of the new aid strategy, says a summary on her department's website. The government says it held 300 consultations in 65 countries, involving 15,000 people.
Two of the main messages it received was to "apply a feminist lens" to development and raise overall aid spending to 0.7 per cent of gross national income.
Shaughn McArthur, CARE Canada's advocacy and government relations adviser, said agencies such as his are applauding the government's focus on women and girls in the upcoming development review.
"This government has come out very strongly in saying we want to support women and girls," said McArthur. (then stop the abortions - Ralph)
"And obviously there needs to be a dollar figure associated to that."
